32 years of Just trying everyday

Image
I was asleep in my bed when I turned 32 yesterday. Some people had been kind enough to send me a few messages , joking about how old I was getting and I had had a fantastic weekend so I went to sleep at about 11 pm. I woke up to a day filled with so many surprise calls and messages and lots and lots of food. I was really touched by the outpouring . Not just because it's January and people are just trying to make it till pay day. No, because I genuinely do find the effort people put in just to make me feel like I matter to them powerful. It's very easy for us to be disillusioned. It's almost a mark of intelligence now to be cynical and removed. To observe the world with a bemused indifference. How else can you see all the shit around you and NOT say "Well we're all fucked" and simply laugh and drink and be merry . Others just don't see the point and resign themselves to that sweet spot between actually giving a fuck and It gives you a great va...

There's one thing you've come to learn. We're all mad.  Seriously . All of us. All our conversations should be centered on trying to figure out just how mad the person sitting across from us is. Some of us think, "Well it's them. They're mad. I'm the normal one. Why can't people be more like me ?" Others take pride in being weird( and miss the irony that that's probably the most average impulse of them all), others simply pay it no mind and keep themselves busy with work or twerking. For you, well you always knew you were a little mad , but growing up has shown you just how crazy you are. Some of it might be considered whimsical or harmless like your disdain for all things pit bull or how you can find comedy in dark and terrible ideas or how you're the most outgoing introvert I know. Your other madness is a little more subtle. It's what causes you to sabotage my own happiness. It's what makes you seek out the familiar des...

Luke Warm: The one where I throw a little shade

On more than one occasion I've been greeted by that particular brand of in-your phase , I'm speaking my mind fwaaa attitude that Ugandans hold in the area of religion. People knowing that I once was found and now lost, take the opportunity upon seeing me at the mall, on the street , in the sauna and firing me with the old, "so...are you still atheist?" The A word when leaving their mouths seems to carry with it an extra level of disdain usually saved for people that chew with their mouths open or professional puppy kickers. I don't really use it to describe myself because , like I always say, it's weird to describe yourself by what you're not-we don't have a special word for people who don't believe in fairies or don't play chess but, mostly because the word has become synonymous with "hating god or claiming we know Gods don't exist" when that's not the case. By comparison the word agnostic is a little more palatable . I...

There's no them...Only us

The problem isn't religion, politics or even capitalism...These are just the systems that have figured out something at the core of humanity- the drive , the hunger to ascend out of whatever mire we are in. It's giving hairless apes the chance to be more than their flesh..To transcend beyond the limitations of business, state or even physics. Look at any comic book thread ans see how viciously people will fight over Marvel versus DC, how quickly fans of one football team can mock the other. Sure it can all be good clean competitive fun and that's healthy.Ideas that we care about give us both the passion to reach beyond what we can grasp, but it also fuels apathy and dehumanization of the people who hold ideas contrary to our own. They become the other..They become them. It's a cliche for a reason that fire can warm you on a cold night, but left to run wild can incinerate all you hold dear. As the world becomes more of a space for I-where my freedoms and individualit...

The worst thing about operating from a "fear of failure" is that you can gain some traction, a modicum of success by all the traditional metrics-a steady income, a house, 2 obnoxious kids whose pictures you show to everyone at every party-but it leaves you wondering.."What if I hadn't been such a coward?Maybe I would be doing something fresh.Something that the world needs instead of just this paint by numbers shit. " That thing has a life. It feeds on your quiet moments. Feeds on the thoughts you try to push down as you make your way to work through an insane traffic jam with people all rushing to go to a place about 90% of them hate. Going to trade away their time for some cash, because that's what adults are supposed to do. And you're one of them. You post memes about the weekend and can't wait to get to the bar and get some sweet chemical relief in a bottle. Drowning out the sounds of your younger self judging you for not having the balls...
