The Deconversion of Anthony Part 5: Maybe one Day

Image
: The Deconversion of Anthony Part 5: Maybe one Day Over the past year, I've gotten myself into quite the number of arguments and debates concerning my faith or lack thereof. Obviously these usually end with both sides feeling like they've been heard and people obviously changing their long held beliefs because of a few witty comebacks and links to Wikipedia articles!! Or at least that’s what we think will happen. More often than not it just ends up in people being more firmly entrenched in their position than before. Minds have been changed before, but I doubt many of them were changed in a public forum. So I just stopped. Stopped giving in to the temptation to debate every single point raised in opposition to a comment or status update that touches on the religious. It’s refreshing to truly not give that much of a fuck anymore. Not to feel like you must answer  every single point. Not giving a fuck. Now that’s a mind set many people claim to have. Althou...

Twenty Nine

That's right. That's my age now. Freaking twenty nine years old. | I don't really understand how this happened but somewhere along the way the years just piled up and I now only have one year till I'm no longer eligible for so many things. I better apply for those scholarships for people under thirty right now. Thirty This time next year , according to my plan as an seventeen year old with a bad case of not only acne but too much time on my hands, I should own my own business and have a certain amount save din the bank so i can go on holiday to Hawaii. wife and kids optional. Well part of those things are true. I do have my own business and the reality is far different from what I thought it would be. My life on paper is something the president would be proud to hold up as a shining beacon. I am gainfully employed, have a master's degree and have no criminal record. I won property and help support some people that would otherwise be in lack. I can't help but fe...

Schadenfreude

Wikipedia defn: pleasure derived from the misfortune of others. Urban Dictionary Defn: Watching a vegetarian being told she just ate chicken   There’s something quite amusing about watching a great person fall. It’s tragic, it’s humbling but it’s also probably the one thing that will leave you feeling better about your own life than anything else. Recently the press ran the story of Ben Mwine, a Watoto stalwart who has done his service to that ministry of English Speaking cell based parts of the body of Christ. The story wasn't of the countless souls that probably found comfort through the music the station he used to run. It wasn't about finding out he has managed to carve out a living in an industry that is pretty much dead or  dying . No it was about his 'mistake'. The mistake of having a child before saying his" I Do’s" in front of a packed house of friends and family. A mistake that would require him to make a public confession and appear humb...

7 x 7 x 7 ..My first Grameen Foundation interview

Image
The thing about first impressions is they are almost always wrong. They usually say more about the person making the observation than the object being observed. So when I walked into the AppLab offices in MTN Towers for my first interview, my preconceived notions of what an international NGO were in place and ready to be confirmed. They weren't. I think I can best describe it as a college library set up. the open plan office space means everyone can see everyone else save for the private office for the country director. Sitting there as I waited for my interview, I saw people walk in carrying rack sacks and laptop bags like they were heading in for class. Jeans and casual shirts to match. "They must be the Tech guys" I thought. Then up to me strolled a well dressed  white lady wearing a big smile. "Hi, I'm Laura. Could you give me a couple of minutes and we can do the interview in that room over there?" She was British. She seemed nice. And also she was the...

A nice run in

The first girl I could call my friend was one of a pair of twins from primary school. She was half Ethiopian and her mother always packed the best snacks for break time. She was a tom boy if there's such a thing in kids not old enough to know that their genitals will come to ruin their lives in  a little under a decade. She climbed gave trees with me, beat many of us boys at arm wrestling, knew how to skip rope(I assume her father must have been a soldier or boxer. ) and had a lunch box with masters of the Universe on the cover. She was just plain cool. Hanging out with her was easy. I was reminded of this when I run into her this weekend while I was out doing sophisticated things(I was smoking shisha and sipping sodas at Legends, but I was doing it while wearing a monocle, so it was sophisticated).  I jokingly punched her in the shoulder at which point she complained that that's no way to treat a lady. I was tempted to ask where said lady was, but ...

Be thankful..and things to be thankful for will magically appear

Laughing hard on Sunday coz Fuck Mondays O ne of my best friends routinely chastises me for being 'too positive.' " Cut that shit out , Joel. You don't have to put a positive spin on everything dude!" she says over and over. And I think she does have a point. Though of course in writing this, I realize I'm doing that thing where you take a positive or valued trait and try and dress it up as a weakness. I do agree, but I figure, all things considered, that's not such a bad thing. This past year has been a pretty shitty one. It was a year in which people passed away at an alarming rate. Not as statistics in some new story, but living moving people that I knew. that made me laugh, and wore glasses and ordered their food in a particular way. They are no more. Many people in my social circles started to wear the stress of life on their faces. Where once was a hopeful expectation of who we were to become and accomplish, there now inhabits a fearful almo...

The Hitlist: D-BAGS

Image
Douchebag definition brought to you by Urban dictionary.com The term "douchebag" generally refers to a male with a certain combination of obnoxious characteristics related to attitude, social ineptitude, public behavior, or outward presentation. Though the common douchebag thinks he is accepted by the people around him, most of his peers dislike him. He has an inflated sense of self-worth, compounded by a lack of social grace and self-awareness. He behaves inappropriately in public, yet is completely ignorant to how pathetic he appears to others. In the show, New Girl, 4 roommates that share a loft decide to have a tip jar set out where whenever someone says  something  that falls into the category of things a douche  would  say, said culprit must place a dollar into the jar. It's a great comedic device and one I just may employ in my every day life.  I have come to loathe a few people. Loathe I say.People that make me wish that abused animals from a tra...
